Webstractor changes from version 1.5.3 to version 1.6
General
- Universal Binary — runs natively on both PowerPC and Intel-based Macs.
- Eliminated a condition that would occasionally cause Webstractor to freeze for 30 seconds or more upon launch in some configurations.
- Scroll wheel (or Mighty Mouse™ ball) now properly scrolls the thumbnails.
- Document search results have an improved appearance.
- Fixed a bug in ranking for ‘multiple words’, ‘not as phrase’ searches.
- Spotlight keywords (as shown in Finder's “Get Info” window) simplified. (10.4 or later only)

- Links Inspector has an improved appearance.
- Can now select and ⌘-C copy from Links Inspector.
- Links copied from Links Inspector can now be fully pasted into Microsoft Excel.
- Fixed minor memory leaks.
Browse Mode
- Fixed bug which prevented forward browse history button from functioning in some configurations.
- Much better at responding to Javascript-based navigation.
- Can now browse Microsoft Word documents found online, given an appropriate (free, 3rd party) plug-in. Webstractor will recommend a plug-in when attempting to browse a Word document without a plug-in.
- Content of non-HTML plain text pages is now indexed for searching.
- “This page wants to open a new window” sheet now includes “Open in External Browser” option.
- Can now ‘Button 3’-click on HTML links to capture them in the background. The scroll ball on a Mighty Mouse™ can be configured as ‘Button 3’, for example. (10.4 or later only)
- Javascript alert and confirmation panels are now implemented.
- Fixed a bug which resulted in some suspended background-capturing pages never restarting.
- Exporting a PDF from Browse mode now results in a PDF of the web page with background images visible. If one wants a PDF without background images, one can still use the Print menu command, then save as PDF.
Edit Mode
- New “Bigger” and “Smaller” items in Font menu for adjusting selected text of multiple sizes in one action.
- Clicking thumbnails now always selects the exact entry which appears at the position clicked on a page.

- (Search and) Replace now uses ‘multiple words’, ‘not as phrase’ search results correctly.

search engine from the magnifying glass menu.

External Browser".

Links Inspector.
- Captured plain text documents are now included in document and
Spotlight searches.

Webstractor changes from version 1.1.1 to version 1.5
Webstractor version
1.5 includes hundreds of additions and changes, the most important of
which are detailed below. Of primary importance is Radar,
Webstractor’s web page update checking and automatic capture
system. To learn about Radar, please refer to “Webstractor
Help” in the Help menu while running Webstractor.
Browse Mode
- New “Allow web page update checking” global preference,
with a checkbox in the Preferences window and an item in the Webstractor
menu. Lets you completely disable/enable all Radar activity instantly.
- New “autocapture” checkbox in the Radar column. Will
automatically capture a new instance of that web page when Webstractor
notices that it has changed. Most settings related to this are to be
found in Document Properties, and page-specific settings are in a web
page's Info sheet.
- New concept of “unread” web pages, which appear in the
Radar column similar to how unread mail messages appear in OS X Mail.
The Dock’s app icon is badged with the total number of unread web
pages, and minimized documents are badged with their own number of unread
web pages.
- Can manually mark web pages read or unread in the same
fashion as Mail.
- New “Unread Web Pages” window lists all documents, with
any unread web pages listed within them.
- New Dashboard widget for quick access to unread web page captures.
(10.4 only)
- New “# unread” display in sub-toolbar, which can be
clicked to go to the first unread item appearing in the list of captured
web pages.
- New “(# loading)” display in sub-toolbar, indicating how
many web pages in your document have not yet been completely captured.
- Bookmarks menu now lets you use bookmarks from Firefox.
- When using bookmarks from Safari within Webstractor, you now have
access to all of them instead of only those in Safari's Bookmarks Bar.
- New progress indicator in sub-toolbar to indicate foreground browser
loading.
- New global “Block Pop-up Windows” item in the Webstractor
menu.
- New “View Source” contextual menu item.
- New “Open in External Browser” contextual menu item.
- Can now control- (or right-) click on column headings to bring up
columns configuration menu.
- New “Use current as new default” in columns configuration
menu: saves current sort column, visible columns, and column arrangement
as the default for new documents.
- Useful tooltips in Browser mode's list of captured pages for the
Radar status and Editable columns.
- Can now hold down ⌘ (command) key when clicking a link to have
it captured without leaving the current page.
- Can option-click the outline triangle of a collection of captures of
the same URL to make all URL groups collapse/expand the same.
- Displays a “lock” icon in the upper right corner of a
document window to indicate that the current page was securely downloaded.
- Form-submitted web page activity is now treated as a
“reload” (when online) to better support sites that
constantly display new content from the same URL.
- Better support for some pages that use pop-up menu javascript-based
navigation.
- En-masse drag-and-drop of Safari bookmarks, local HTML files, or use
of the “browse the selected links” button in Links Inspector
all result in immediate creation of captured web pages which all capture
in the background, instead of queuing them for foreground capture.
- Documents with pages that haven’t completed capturing at the
time the document is saved and closed will re-start capturing those pages
when the document is re-opened.
- Can now print (or PDF export) the current web page when in browse mode.
- Now recognizes Acrobat’s Safari PDF browsing plug-in, and tells
the user how to turn it off to avoid problems in Webstractor.
- Ensures that partially captured web pages (caused by clicking a link
before the page is finished loading) are later finished off at the next
reasonable moment.
- Can now drag Safari's “Web Archives” to the captures
list.(10.3.9 or later)
- Can now drag-and-drop local HTML files, images, or Web Archives to
the Webstractor application icon in order to capture the items as
separate Untitled documents.
- Browse captures list shows right-to-left titles more sensibly.
Search
- Support for Spotlight, providing full text search, keywords, and
source web site information. (10.4 only)
- Searches no longer need to be treated as a phrase. You can now
search for any number of individual terms to be found separately.
- Search results now include a Rank bar indicating relevance. You may
also sort by this new Rank column.
- Search results are now color-highlighted to indicate results in the
currently selected web page.
- Typing a search and pressing <enter> will now reveal the first
result in the page you are looking at — it will no longer take
you to a different captured web page.
- Displays the number of results found, and in how many items they
occurred.
Other changes
- New, more efficient document format. Usually less memory needed while
open, smaller documents, and faster loading and saving.
- Much better editable web page copy creation, more often closely
resembling the browsed page.
- New instant Bibliography creation button. Bibliography entries are
editable and reloadable.
- Table of Contents and Bibliography now respect font preferences.
- Can now shift-select discontinuously in Edit mode (except within a
single text block). This allows you to carefully select multiple items
in order to affect them all with a single change, instead of selecting
and changing portions one at a time.
- Simpler yet more informative Quick Start, which appears every time
Webstractor is launched (by default).
- Can invoke the Feedback sheet from the Webstractor menu.
- Much more responsive and consistent thumbnails.
- Many other minor improvements and bug fixes.
